2-n-propyl-4-methylbenzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid and N-methyl-o-phenylenediamine react in paraformaldehyde at 150°C to form 2-n-propyl-4-methyl-6-(1-methylbenzimidazole-2-yl)benzimidazole. Then, it is alkylated with tert-butyl 2-(4-bromomethylphenyl)benzoate in dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide. The obtained product is hydrolyzed in dimethylformamide under the action of trifluoroacetic acid to obtain telmisartan.
