Using the property that citronella aldehyde can be easily cyclized into isomenthol, dextro citronella aldehyde is cyclized into levo-isomenthol by using an acid catalyst (e.g., silica gel), and then the levo-isomenthol is separated and hydrogenated to produce levo-menthol. Alkylation of m-cresol in the presence of aluminum m-cresol produces thymol.
