Physicochemical Property of Beta-Carotene powder

Reddish purple to dark red crystalline powder, slightly peculiar odor.Beta-Carotene powder is soluble in acetone, chloroform, petroleum ether, benzene and vegetable oil, insoluble in water, propylene glycol and glycerol, insoluble in methanol and ethanol. The solubility in olive oil and benzene is 0.1g/mL, and the solubility in chloroform is 4.3g/100mL. It is orange-red in high concentration and orange to yellow in low concentration.

It is stable in the range of pH 2-7, and is not affected by reducing substances, but it is unstable to light and oxygen, and iron ions will promote its discoloration.

Extraction from Salt Algae

Salt algae are marine plankton growing in salt fields, which are unicellular algae and can be reproduced in large quantities under artificially controlled conditions. China has a long coastline, rich in potential resources, has a better development prospect, in the national "Seventh Five-Year" public relations program proposed the following two process routes.

• (1) Petroleum ether extraction process. The wet salt algae powder was extracted with No.6 solvent oil at 50℃ for about 20min, and the filtrate was filtered and then extracted twice. The filtrate was concentrated by thin-film evaporation, crystallization, filtration and vacuum drying to obtain Beta-Carotene Raw Materials, with an extraction rate of about 80%.
• (2) Vegetable oil extraction process. The vegetable oil was extracted by stirring at 75℃ for 30-60min with 2 times of the dry salt algae powder, separated by centrifugation in a three-legged centrifuge, and then centrifuged and settled in a disk centrifuge to obtain the oil solution of Beta-Carotene CAS 7235-40-7.
