Beta-Hydroxybutyric Acid powder is widely found in nature and in human blood and urine. It is optically active and crystalline in its pure form. The hydroxyl group can be associated, easily soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and easily decomposed by dry steaming. Due to the presence of polar group OH, its acidity is enhanced, and it is easy to esterify with alcohols or acids. Polymers of Beta-Hydroxybutyric Acid can be decomposed by microorganisms in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, so they can be applied to biodegradable plastics, but there is no large-scale industrial production at present.
