Production method of DL-α-Tocopherol Powder
DL-α-Tocopherol CAS 10191-41-0 is produced from 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene by iodination, nitration, reduction and oxidation to obtain 2,3,5-trimethylbenzoquinone, and then reduced and condensed with chlorophyllin.
A 100 ml round-bottomed flask equipped with a Dean-Stark device and a condenser was purged with nitrogen, after which 6.24 g (0.041 mol) of TMHQ, 4.16 g of silica gel, and 2.08 g (0.015 mol) of ZnCl2 were added, followed by the addition of 134 ml of n-heptane and stirring of the solution. The flask was equipped with a dropping funnel through which nitrogen was blown into the flask. To this dropping funnel was added a solution of 12.48 g (0.042 mole) of isophytol in 10 ml of n-heptane, and the flask was heated to reflux in a nitrogen atmosphere. While refluxing, the solution of isophytol in n-heptane was slowly added to the flask through this dropping funnel over a period of 1 hour. At the end of the dropwise addition, the reaction was allowed to proceed under reflux conditions for another 2 hours. The product mixture was analyzed by GC to give a conversion of 96.9% for TMHQ and a purity of 99.1% for DL-α-tocopherol.
