Zinc bromide is hygroscopic and forms ZnBr2·2H2 O dihydrate. White diamond shaped crystalline powder. Density 4.201g/cm3. Melting point 394℃. Boiling point 650℃. Soluble in water, alcohol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran. Soluble in ammonia. Insoluble in ether. Zinc bromide powder is prepared by distillation of pure zinc and bromine. Zinc bromide powder is used as an aftertreatment agent for rayon. It can also be used in pharmaceuticals and photography. Zinc bromide was prepared by distillation of pure metal zinc and refined bromine in carbon dioxide atmosphere by direct method.
