Applications/Functions of Shikonin powder
- Edible purple coloring. Shikonin powder was used for coloring of spicy meat and poultry cans with the dosage of 0.35 ~ 0.56g/kg. The crushed comfrey can be placed in a fine sieve, and the hot oil at 160 ~ 170 ° C is poured on it to dissolve the pigment in the oil. Sieve the oil, mix with the paprika in the container, stir well and boil to make a mixed sauce.

Physicochemical Property of Shikonin powder
Shikonin purple brown acicular crystal, melting point 147℃, rotation αD20=+135°(benzene). Soluble in pheneether, acetone, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, glycerin, animal and vegetable oil and alkaline aqueous solution, insoluble in water.
Production methodprocess of Shikonin powder
The roots of comfrey were extracted with 4 times the amount (mass) of refined soybean oil for 6min at 165 ~ 170 ℃, and then the extract was divided into 2 times with 95% ethanol (volume ratio), which was slightly more than the soybean oil. The ethanol extract was concentrated at a vacuum of 80kPa, and then the insoluble matter was filtered to obtain Shikonin powder.
