Potassium formate is a colorless transparent liquid or white solid, which is highly hydabsorbent, reductive and reactive with strong oxidant. The density of potassium formate is 1.9100g/cm3, soluble in water, and the specific gravity of saturated solution is 1.58g/cm3. It is non-toxic and non-corrosive. Potassium formate powder can be synthesized by heating carbon monoxide with potassium hydroxide, which is further acidified and distilled to obtain formic acid. The drilling fluid system prepared with potassium formate has outstanding advantages such as strong inhibition, good compatibility, environmental protection and oil layer protection. Field application results show that potassium formate inhibits the hydration of clay.
