Uses and synthesis of Bromophenol Blue powder

Bromophenol Blue powder is tetrabromophenol sulfonphthalide in Chinese with CAS number 115-39-9 and molecular formula C19H10Br4O5S. Bromophenol Blue is colorless or light rose red fine crystal. Soluble in ethanol, benzene, ether and other organic solvents, slightly soluble in water, the aqueous solution is yellow, in the alkaline solution is blue-purple. Bromophenol Blue is mainly used as an acid-base indicator, with a pH range of 3.0 to 4.6 and a color change from yellow to green to blue-purple.

Bromophenol Blue colorless to light red crystal or light yellow to light brown powder. Melting point 279℃ (decomposition). Soluble in alcohol, dilute lye and ammonia solution is blue, slightly soluble in water and ether solution with yellow, its sodium salt dissolved in water is blue.

Production methodprocess of Bromophenol Blue powder

Dissolve phenol red in ice acetic acid, stir with the solution of bromine dissolved in ice acetic acid, stir for a few minutes, pour into 60℃ hot water, cool to room temperature, leave overnight. Bromophenol Blue powder was obtained by filtration, washing filter cake with glacial acetic acid and benzene successively, and drying.
