β-Alanine is named beta-Alanine in English, also known as 3-amino-propionic acid, molecular formula is C3H7NO2, molecular weight is 89.09, CAS registration number is 107-95-9, β-Alanine is a white prismatic crystal, mainly used to synthesize pantothenic acid and calcium pantothenate, carnosine, pamidronate sodium, balsalazine, etc. It is widely used in medicine, feed, food and other fields. β-Alanine powder is a non-essential amino acid; it is the only naturally occurring β-amino acid. In nature, it can exist in free state in the root nodules of legumes, in tea leaves, brain hydrolysates of mammals, and in tobacco leaves and smoke. It usually works with histidine to produce carnosine, which is stored in our skeletal muscles.

The relative density is 1.437. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol and ethanol, insoluble in ether and acetone. Beta-alanine is non-toxic, but contact with eyes and skin should be avoided and is slightly hazardous to water. Avoid contact with strong oxidants.

Acrylonitrile reacts with ammonia in diphenylamine and tert-butanol solution to form β-aminopropionitrile, which is then alkalized to obtain β-Alanine.
