    What is the difference between DL-methionine and L-methionine?

    1. Chemical structure and sources

    DL-Methionine: Synthetic racemic mixture containing equal amounts of D-type (biologically inactive) and L-type, low synthetic cost, mainly used in animal feed.

    In the presence of formic acid and copper acetate, propionaldehyde and methyl mercaptan condense to form 3-methylthiopropionaldehyde. Then mixed with sodium cyanide and ammonium bicarbonate solution.

    Reacted at 90℃ to obtain methylthioethylglycolide. Without separation and purification, it can be heated to 180°C together with 28% sodium hydroxide solution and hydrolysed to produce sodium methionine. Neutralisation with hydrochloric acid gives DL-Methionine powder .
