It is rapidly hydrolyzed to Candesartan during gastrointestinal absorption. Candesartan cilexetil blocks angiotensin II's vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion effects by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to AT1 receptors in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and adrenal glands.
