Uses and synthesis of Carrageenan powder.
Carrageenan powder, also known as carrageenan, carrageenan. Carrageenan (also known as carrageenan or algin) is a natural polysaccharide plant gum derived from red algae. Carrageenan is widely used in food industry, chemical industry, biochemistry, medical research and other fields. Carrageenan has the properties of forming hydrophilic colloid, gel, thickening, emulsification, membrane and stable dispersion, so it is widely used in dairy products, ice cream, fruit juice drinks, bread and water
Applications/Functions of Carrageenan powder
Thickening agent; Stabilizer; Emulsifier; Suspension agent; Gelling agent; Binder.
Carrageenan powder is a thickening agent, which can be used in all kinds of food in accordance with the requirements of production. It also has the function of clarifying agent and stabilizing agent.
Food industry: This is the main application area of carrageenan, accounting for more than 80% of the total amount of carrageenan. In the food industry, carrageenan is mainly used as a thickener, gelling agent, stabilizer, emulsifier and texturizer.
Cosmetics and personal care products: Carrageenan is also widely used in cosmetics and personal care products, mainly as a thickener, stabilizer, moisturizer, film former, thixotropic agent, etc.
Medicine and biopharmaceutical field: Carrageenan also has certain application potential in the medical field, mainly based on its biocompatibility, biodegradability, gelling property and possible biological activity
Physicochemical Property of Carrageenan powder
Translucent, crumpled, faintly glossy flakes or white to yellowish powder, odorless and slightly algal. κ-carrageenan and ε-carrageenan are soluble in hot water, λ-carrageenan is soluble in water, but they are not soluble in organic solvents. Dry carrageenan is very stable and does not hydrolyze even when heated in neutral and alkaline solutions, but hydrolysis easily occurs in acidic solutions below Ph 4.
Product method of Carrageenan powder
Seaweed pretreatment: Harvested red algae seaweed needs to be washed to remove impurities, silt, attachments, etc. Sometimes alkaline treatment (such as soaking in potassium hydroxide solution) is also performed to improve the extraction rate and gel strength of carrageenan.
Extraction: The pretreated seaweed is placed in hot water (usually 80-90°C) for extraction. The extraction time is usually 1-3 hours, and stirring is required during the period to promote the dissolution of carrageenan from the seaweed cell wall. In order to improve the extraction efficiency, alkaline additives (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide) are sometimes added to the extract.
Filtration: The extract contains insoluble impurities such as seaweed residues and cellulose, which need to be filtered and separated. Common filtration methods include plate and frame filter pressing, vacuum filtration, etc. In order to improve filtration efficiency, filter aids such as diatomaceous earth are sometimes added.
Concentration (optional): In order to reduce the energy consumption of the subsequent precipitation process, the filtrate is sometimes concentrated. Common concentration methods include vacuum concentration, evaporation concentration, etc.
