Almost insoluble in water, but soluble in organic acids such as formic acid, acetic acid, benzoic acid and naphthenic acid, as well as dilute inorganic acids. Chitosan is a white or off-white translucent flake solid with a pearly luster. Tasteless, non-toxic and easy to degrade, it is a rare natural cationic polyelectrolyte. A polysaccharide obtained by hydrolysis of a strong base or enzymolysis to remove the acetyl group from the chitin glycogroup. Chitosan is a biocompatible, bacterial-resistant, biodegradable polyelectrolyte that has a wide range of biomedical and industrial applications. Its chemical properties and low toxicity can be used as a component of drugs, in gene transfer systems, as a biodegradable membrane, and as a skeleton in tissue engineering.
